Record Bag - March 07

Recent record releases

The Mitchell & Dewbury Band, Beyond The Rains.
Is a superb mix of Brazilian Jazz that oozes that summer time feel. Released on Mr Bongo Records it does not disappoint. Tracks like Darker than a Shadow featuring legend Terry Callier, and Kaleidoscope  (within a wheel ) featuring Lizzie Rendall are both fantastic. Factor in the delightful drum and base remix of Beyond The Rains, you almost have the perfect album.
10/10

Roll Deep, Rules and Regulations
The latest release from the East London Grime collective bought out on their independent label Roll Deep Recordings. An album for  underground and mainstream fans alike. The sampling brings a certain originality with gut wrenching violins in Celebrate ,and  the clubbed out synths in Do this thing. Up and coming vocalist Alex Mills features on the song Floating Thru da sky ,that is a beautiful concoction of soft vocals and heart felt lyrics from the  mc's. A vast improvement from previous album In At the Deep End.
7/10

Demon Boyz, Recognition (Suspect Packages)
Just what we need!Demon Boyz are on par with legend Slick Rick whose charismatic Brixton charm conquered America. Unashamedly British, the album rekindles top tracks like Vibes and This is a Jam, which are big tunes from back in the day. Artists Asher D (former So Solid Crew) and Daddy Freddy feature on the album, paying homage to the duo. For those aspiring to make good hip hop it pays to invest in this album and learn about the birth of British hip hop.
7/10

4Hero,Play With The Changes
4 Hero Delight our ears with a futuristic soul mix that incorporates fantastic vocalists giving this album a dream like feel. A combination of male and female vocalists from the soul scene give the album a creamy touch. Including the likes of Carina Anderson,  Ursula Rucker and  Bugz in the Attic’s Kaidi Taitham.  Highlights of the album are Stoke up the Fire which has hypnotic vocals . The Awakening Featuring Ursula Rucker  is a poetic mix of jazz and spoken word . A great album deserving of 9/10.

Lethal and Destruction, The Journey
Not the highlight of the record bag this week. The first album is released on  independent label Bleak house. Lethal has talent lyrically he can tell a story, but needs to tone the aggression as it can be perceived as vacuous. He also relies on cliches that consist of chatting about 'Burberry' and 'burning'! The production features over used symphonic classical samples that are manipulated to add drama to the songs.. Most promising song is Don Ah Don featuring Skeme and Laurie Sterling.
