Dionne Smith of Coiffeur Group, Exclusive Interview

Award winning celebrity and natural hair stylist Dionne Smith has launched on line platform, the Coiffeur Group. The exclusive members site will be a one stop hub for the professional hair stylist providing everything they need to excel in their careers and grow their brand. Ebonyonline.net sat down with the entrepreneurial lady to find out more.

EOL: Tell us briefly why you started the Group?
DS: I started Coiffure Group as a means to help other hairstylists/hairdressers advance their knowledge, skill set and improve on there overall branding. I get tons of emails, messages from stylists all the time asking questions about how to do things and I thought this would be a great way to help everyone all at once.

EOL: What are some of the benefits members can enjoy?
DS: Exclusive access, own profile setups, groups, forums, hot of the press industry news, job openings, information on industry events around the world, when, where etc, hair Awards and when they take place, access to our directory, Masterclasses and training, some of which will be free to members and other a small fee, networking events and our end of year soiree exclusive to members.

EOL: Tell us more about the directory you aim to include?
The directory will include industry professional that can assist them in their growth such as photographers, video, fashion stylists, (if they are wanting to do a professional shoot) marketers, PR, all aspects to help one develop their brand as a hairstylist/hairdresser.

EOL: Why is it important for newly qualified stylists to network with established ones?
DS: That’s how one can learn from another. Most established hairstylists have been where there are now, so having access to them and being able to talk and discuss issues with them or even get some work experience or even assist them on a job is priceless.

EOL: Why do you think so many of the stylists are not going for qualifications and why would you encourage them to do so?
DS: This is the million dollar question, I believe it’s because there are currently no regulations and anyone can set up a salon, so people see it as a quick thing and way to make money so they just go with it. For me I believe everything starts with the foundation, education is key there is more to hair than just styling, there is science and understanding the science behind hair is vital especially when dealing with chemical processes. It will improve anyone’s knowledge and put you on a different level when delivering your service.

EOL: Tell us a bit about your business journey?
DS: I have tried so many thing over the years, I am very driven and a go-getter and sometimes this can be my downfall, but I never give up. I’ve had lots of blows over the years and I’ve come through them and rose again. I believe with Coiffeur Group this will be the one that really will be great as there is currently nothing else out there like this offering this to stylists.

EOL: What other directions or projects do you have for the Group?
DS:  Next steps is our launch event for October hopefully, then expanding globally. I also want to start sponsoring events and getting the members out to do the hair and give them great experiences. I want to be able to bring in international stylists to deliver training while also using some of our seasoned stylists here in the UK. I would love to be able to send members to host classes internationally too, so lots of opportunities can come from this.

I plan to have networking events and a year to year soiree for the members. I also want to go on tour starting with the UK and members can also get involved in that. I want the members to feel like a part of a supported network and that’s what I want Coiffeur to be.  A worldwide platform connecting hairstylists/hairdressers all over the world.

EOL: Finally why would you encourage stylists at all levels to get involved with the Group.
DS: I think with all said, what took me over 20 years to learn and build they would have it all at the click of a button. Anyone that can see the bigger picture would want to join, whether established or not, we all have something to give and something to gain, it’s a no brainer!
