Screen Nation Awards 2017 – Review

The Screen Nation Awards took place this year at the plush and newly refurbished Park Plaza, London Riverbank Hotel. It was hosted by Capital Xtra’s king of Afrobeat DJ Abrantee and BBC’s treasure Brenda Emmanus.

This was the award’s 12th year and there are no signs of it stopping!

If you have been in hibernation over the years and are not familiar with the award show, Screen Nation, founded by Charles Thompson MBE is UK’s biggest award show recognising the achievements of our successful black actors and actresses and entertainers on TV and Film.

As with every show, Screen Nation has no trouble in bringing out the stars.  Adopting the theme of New, Next, Now, Forever Black this year saw the likes of Arnold Oceng, Charles Venn, Aml Ameen, Apprentice star Samuel Boateng, Channel 4’s Google Box duo Sandy and Sandra (pictured left) amongst others in attendance and stepping out on the red carpet.

Now an award show would not complete without award winners. As always there were a number of awards up for grabs this year including:

Top actresses Ruth Negga, Michaela Cole and Judith Shekoni fought off fierce competition in their categories each taking home an award in Female Performance in Film, Favourite Comedy Talent and Female Performance in TV.

Nominated in three categories, UK actor and director, Noel Clarke won the Achievement In Film Production Award.

A standing ovation was amongst the crowd when Baroness Lawrence of Clarendon OBE, the mother of Steven Lawrence presented the Diversity In Drama Production Award to the father of Damilola Taylor, Richard Taylor OBE and the cast of Damilola, Our Loved Boy.

Male Performance in TV Award won by Malachi Kirby for his performance in roots.

Favourite African UK Movie won by Oxford Gardens.

Favourite Black Broadcaster won by ABN TV.

Diversity in Drama Production Award went to Damilola, Our Loved Boy, BBC One.

Edric Connor Trailblazer Award went to Horace Ove CBE.

This year’s guests were also treated to a special performance from none other than The Voice UK finalist Michelle John.

What was evident in the room was the support for one another, the passion to achieve bigger and better things and to continue to highlight the need of culture and diversity in the arena of TV and Film.
