If you like your jazz with a tinge of Brazilian Latin, you won’t want to miss the forthcoming Airto and Flora Purim shows at the legendary Ronnie Scotts, Soho.

With careers spanning 50 years plus, this critically acclaimed Brazilian duo are performing once again after many years away from the European circuit.

Percussionist Airto was a sought-after musician in Brazil in the early 60’s, later moving to New York where he met his lifelong vocalist partner Flora Purim who was already a big bossa nova star in her native country.

Airto played with the Miles Davis group, before together with Flora, going on to join Chick Corea’s Return to Forever band. This spawned an amazing musical period for both, as they went to work with a stellar range of jazz and jazz funk artists such as Herbie Hancock, George Duke, Lee Morgan, Keith Jarrett to name but a few.

Around the early 1970s Airto and Flora began their solo careers but often collaborated on many projects and recordings, forming their own group Fourth World in the 1990’s.

After a sabbatical period, Airto recorded Aluê – his first album ever made in his native Brazil, presented in a European tour in 2018. Now Flora is back on stage with Airto in a new tour to revisit some of their brightest moments and continue to challenge the borders of creative music.

Known primarily for her her sensual, largely non‐verbal vocal style, as can be heard on the chart topping ‘Stories to Tell’ album or the foot tapping ‘Open Your Eyes’ and the multitude of albums she’s recorded, Flora continues to attract global attention and plaudits.

Airto is percussive genius. He has been described as “one of the most evocative percussion virtuosi on the planet, capable of unleashing everything from the sounds of bird songs and monsoons to the badgering monologues and yelps of a street market.”

Together this amazing collaborative duo is a joy to witness. Expect a night of hot percussive Latin-jazz rhythms, subtly blended with Flora’s cascading high octave vocals from a tight well experienced band. Miss at your peril.
