Incognito play Ronnie’s (18-23 Sept)

Incognito, the legendary 1970’s jazz funk/fusion group formed by Jean-Paul Manuick (aka Bluey) and Paul “Tubbs” Williams out of the ashes of the massively popular Light of the World are back to funk up Ronnie Scott’s for six nights this September.

They will be performing from their most recent album ‘Amplified Soul’, as well many of their well-crafted classic jazz funk grooves. So expect to hear dance floor fillers like ‘Always There’, Positivity, Nights over Egypt, Don’t You Worry ’Bout a Thing and many more.

Expect a stellar line up of London’s finest musician with soulful vocals provided by the likes of Vanessa Haynes and Katie Leone all punctuated by trademark Incognito horn section.

Incognito are recognised for their ability to make positive feel good music. Asked about the secret to their success and philosophy around their music Bluey said “I would witness the complete transformation of weary looking weather beaten workers from the sugar cane plantations as they arrived on the beach, bones aching and almost collapsing on the ground. Within minutes they would be dancing with wide grins on their faces as local musicians struck up the beat. They would echo the chants of (The man) who beaconed them to put their troubles aside and rejoice in these moments of ecstasy. I was captivated, hooked line and sinker! My mission from that moment was to be (The man)!”

Although their self-titled 1981 debut was a landmark for UK jazz-funk (featuring a young Sade pictured on the cover and guests including Hugh Masekela), it was their early 90’s recordings for Gilles Peterson Talkin’ Loud label (1991’s ‘Inside Life’, 1992’s ‘Tribes, Vibes and Scribes’ and 1993’s Positivity’) that spawned many of their hit songs. These would see them becoming million-selling artists cementing their place among the in-demand bands on the international stage.
